Here is the eleventh interview conducted by RE/MAX realtor Connie White of Norwell, MA in a series featuring experts in the local South Shore business community. In this video she interviews Priscilla Chura, president of Small Biz CFO. Priscilla is a CFO/controller for hire. She works with small businesses to help them get their financial house in order by providing CFO and controller services along with financial and managerial accounting. With Bachelor degrees in Finance and Accounting, an MBA from Boston College, and 25 years of experience holding down senior financial management positions such as CFO, COO, controller, treasurer, and financial director, Priscilla brings a unique perspective to the small business owner. Her role changes depending on the size of her client. For start-ups, she typically generates financial projections for their business plan, quantifying assumptions to see if what they're planning on doing is a viable business. She also helps to set up and configure accounting systems, then train the owners. For larger companies, she often gets called in to "clean up the books" because many business owners try to save money in the beginning and do it themselves. Ironically, it typically costs a company more to fix the books than to hire someone to do it right in the first place. She also works with companies on budgeting, planning, and work flow management, as well as helping recruit, hire, and train all levels of financial and accounting staff. She has set up contract negotiations for expansions, and put sales commission structures in place. Although many small businesses under $10 million are in need of a CFO or controller, they often don't realize it and need to be educated on that fact, as they typically don't know what a CFO does. Many entrepreneurs don't want anything to do with their financial numbers, but Priscilla is passionate about training them to have basic financial literacy.
